Director Internal Communications (Total Rewards)

Position overview
Reports to the Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications and Investor Relations. Serves as the leader of enterprise-wide Total Rewards communication, education and engagement strategy to increase employee understanding of and participation in various benefits and compensation programs (i.e. retirement savings, 401(k), health and wellness). Uses experience and understanding of benefits and compensation to develop and implement measurable communication plans to determine participation by wide-array of employee groups, including call and service center employees. In addition, executes company-wide employee communications strategies and campaigns that inform, engage and align employees with Assurant’s strategy and business priorities through a variety of employee communications channels, including e-mail newsletters, the intranet, leader messages, etc.
Other attributes essential for success in this role include:
  • Work experience and understanding of benefits, compensation and wellness programs is critical.
  • Serve as a senior communication strategist and advisor.
  • Ability to create, edit and/or edits communication materials to ensure continuity support of Benefits/Compensation goals and corporate strategy.
  • Effective collaboration skills to engage with leaders and employees in multiple locations and a wide-range of employee functions/populations
  • Proven budget management skills to maximize resources and rollout cost effective campaigns
  • Understanding of best practices, innovative and effective employee communication approaches
  • Adept at use of digital tools and technology-aided resources to engage employees and achieve outcomes.
  • Understanding of design and production considerations to ensure materials produced adhere to brand standards and present information in fresh and effective ways
  • Strong writer and editor of multiple forms of copy.
Key Responsibilities
  • Communication responsibilities include:
  • Strategy and communication plans to accomplish measurable outcomes and results
  • Implementation of communication plans, including writing of key messages and agreed upon collateral materials to support multiple Benefits/Compensation groups
  • Annual campaigns to enhance employee understanding and engagement in Assurant Total Rewards resources, including but not limited to:
    • Assurant enterprise-wide health and wellness events and campaigns;
    • Annual benefits enrollment;
    • Retirement and 401(k) programs;
    • Short and long-term compensation programs;
    • New hire guides;
    • Third-party tools and resources (i.e. EAP, Castlight, etc.)
  • Support and/or execute enterprise-wide internal communications, as needed including:
  • Collaborate with teams across Business segments to drive relevant messages from their organizations into companywide channels.
  • Participate in enhancing Assurant’s primary company-wide employee communications channels, including e-mail newsletters, the intranet, leader messages, etc.
  • Partner with members of the corporate communications team and other Corporate functions (e.g., finance, legal, IT and risk management) to develop communications plans that support their business objectives.


Basic Qualifications

  • 10 years of related work experience with relevant corporate employee communication and Total Rewards (benefits, compensation support) experience
  • Bachelors' degree (concentration in public relations, journalism, communications or HR/Benefits communication preferred)

Other Requirements

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Deep understanding of employee communications strategies, tactics and channels.
  • Knowledge of benefits and compensation fundamentals with ability to comprehend and express complex ideas in easy-to-understand communication materials for multiple employee groups is essential
  • Organized, deadline-driven and capable of managing multiple priorities and delivering results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work unpredictable hours when necessary as well as be available for travel.
  • Ability to supervise others.
  • Experience collaborating with and advising senior leaders on communications strategies.
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationships skills, program, third-party/agent management skills; and as part of a larger, collaborative team to accomplish defined goals and timelines
  • Effective speaking skills in multiple forums including before large groups, in one-to-one conversations via small group web-meetings or conference calls, and in meetings with colleagues and senior leadership of Assurant
  • Familiarity and comfort with contemporary benefits, compensation, human resources and communication practices including social media techniques and strategies
  • Disciplined project management, follow-up, and deadline management skills;
  • Ability to work and respond quickly and effectively in a dynamic, collaborative culture;
  • High degree of comfort interacting at senior-executive level and understanding financial and other complex information
  • Strong project and budget management skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Financial services/insurance industry experience a plus
