As a Talent Acquisition Consultant specializing in diversity sourcing and recruiting, my goal is to find top talent from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Whether you’re a recent graduate or a seasoned professional, standing out in today’s competitive job market is crucial. While recruiters actively seek candidates, there are specific things you can do to make sure you’re seen and noticed online. In this blog, I’ll share insider tips to help you get noticed by recruiters and hiring managers.
- Make sure your professional profile is up to date with your most recent work experience, skills, education, and certifications. It’s important that your profile closely matches your resume in dates, titles, and employers.
- Be sure to include keywords in your profile that reflect the type of work you have done and the job you are looking for. Recruiters run searches that look for specific key skills or requirements of available jobs, so you want to ensure you have included these on your profile. Use specific job titles, skills, and systems you have experience with…be detailed.
- Remember to select a profile photo that conveys professionalism and creates a positive first impression on recruiters and hiring managers. Avoid using overly casual or personal pictures on LinkedIn. Instead, choose a professional headshot of yourself alone, preferably with a smile, rather than in a group or with family.
- Enhance your profile with a few recommendations from former bosses and peers. Ensure that the individuals providing recommendations are familiar with your work and have been positively influenced by your contributions. These recommendations can help determine whether you have certain soft skills, such as being good with customers or having a good work ethic.
- Highlight your industry involvement by showcasing your group memberships. Even if you're not working in a specific field, joining related groups can demonstrate your interest and commitment to a career change. This not only enhances your profile but also opens up networking opportunities. Make connections. Recruiters are looking beyond the content of your profile; we’re also looking at your connections. Make sure you’re connected to people who are relevant to your career and that you are well-networked in your industry. Connect with all your peers, as this could also increase your chances of a recruiter finding your profile while looking at one of your colleagues.
- Finally, don’t be afraid to reach out directly. If you’ve applied to a role you feel you’d be a good fit for and submitted your resume, send a message to the Recruiter to follow up, being direct and to the point. This isn’t a guaranteed strategy, but every bit of effort in today’s challenging job market counts.
