Assurant Ventures Principal

Assurant Ventures (“AV”) is the venture capital arm of Assurant.  Through our dedicated team of venture capital professionals, AV invests in early-stage, high-growth technology businesses that may be complementary or disruptive to Assurant.  The team has two main objectives, driving both financial returns through our investments and strategic value through our connectivity to the venture capital investor and startup ecosystem.  On the strategic side, the AV team supports a wide range of activities such as facilitating commercial/capability partnerships with high-growth startups as well as identifying and evaluating disruptive market trends.  Since inception in 2015, Assurant Ventures has connected with more than 3,000 startups and invested more than $130 million across 28 companies.  More information on Assurant Ventures can be found at

The AV Principal works in collaboration with the AV team & strategy leaders of Assurant. You will support Assurant’s efforts to make corporate venture capital and growth stage investments in companies that complement and expand Assurant’s existing businesses and align with growth strategy – all with the ultimate goal to drive financial and strategic returns.

What will be my duties and responsibilities in this job?  

  • Ensure alignment on strategic priorities for Assurant and assess where growth strategies and/or disruption opportunities could benefit from venture and growth stage investments

  • Build sector screens to assess attractiveness of potential sectors and investment targets

  • Develop investment theses based on analysis

  • Identify high potential targets

  • Outreach to and build relationships accordingly with prospective targets

  • Build financial valuation and expected return models that include sensitivity and scenario analyses

  • Lead and/or partner on due diligence process

  • Network & build relationships with VC and PE Funds, incubators, entrepreneurs, investment banks, to build a high value network of potential sources for investment opportunities

  • Lead and/or partner in the process in creating and presenting investment cases to the Assurant Ventures Investment Committee

  • Maintain list of potential investment targets and track developments for targets over time

  • Monitor portfolio investments through board observer roles and provide input at appropriate times to help drive results at portfolio companies

  • Develop relationships with key business leaders at Assurant & know when to bring in key stakeholders and subject matter experts

  • Identify insights based on research, networking and learnings from portfolio companies and effectively communicate the insights back to the right set of business leaders within AIZ on a periodic, as appropriate, basis

  • Facilitate connections across start-ups, the VC community, and Assurant businesses to add value to all parties

  • Deliver on anticipated financial results & track investment theses accordingly

What are the requirements needed for this position?  

  • Bachelor’s Degree from 4 year accredited college

  • 5+ years of post-collegiate experience minimum in investment management, investment banking, management consulting, or similar quantitative-focused environment

  • Strong knowledge of investment environment

  • Proficiency with MS Office suite including Excel and PowerPoint

What other skills/experience would be helpful to have?  

  • 5+ years in investment management, investment banking, management consulting, or similar quantitative-focused environment

  • 2+ years of experience in venture-related fields (e.g., venture debt, venture capital)

  • Masters of Business Administration or equivalent advanced degree is beneficial

  • Strong expertise in investment analysis, particularly in fast-paced environments with limited information requiring defensible assumption-making

  • Demonstrated relationship building and partnering skills, with proven track record developing a network critical to sourcing efforts

  • Comfortable operating at executive level and representing the enterprise at high levels

  • Excellent collaboration skills, ability to influence without direct authority

  • Excellent communication and client-oriented skills

  • Excellent writing and presentation skills

  • Able to work effectively in fast paced and changing environment

  • Cultural fit to Assurant in regard to values and ethics

  • Excellent /problem solving/planning/project management skills

  • Thought leader, high degree of creativity & innovation

How much should I expect to travel?  

  • 10-20% Travel, primarily associated with network building (e.g., conferences) and diligence visits
