AVP, Compliance & Underwriting

The Assistant Vice President of Underwriting & Compliance is responsible for directing the underwriting and compliance activities of the Business Unit.  In this role, you will plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the areas of compliance and underwriting for the assigned program/s written by the Global Home Mortgage Lending Solutions group. This will include voluntary homeowners, dwelling fire programs, lender-placed dwelling fire programs, lender-placed, flood, lender-placed wind/ex-wind, and/or Real Estate Owned (REO) programs provided through the business unit.


What will be my duties and responsibilities in this job?  

  • Direct the underwriting and filing activities and initiatives for the assigned program/s written by the Global Home Mortgage Lending Solutions group, which may include voluntary homeowners, dwelling fire programs, lender-placed dwelling fire programs, flood or wind/ex-wind programs, and/or Real Estate-Owned (REO) programs.
  • Excess and Surplus lines tax reporting and tax filing as needed.
  •  In consultation with leaders and team members, develop short—and long-term goals and plans for the area of responsibility.
  • Oversee the new insurance product development activities related to assigned programs' coverage, rate, and form development.
  • Monitors all assigned homeowners and dwelling fire program/s from a profitability standpoint and recommends changes when needed.
  • Reviews coverages, territories, underwriting guidelines, processes, etc., to ensure maximum profitability.
  • Works with the Regulatory Compliance Department to ensure compliance with state regulations
  • Directs all DOI activity and Market Conduct Exams for the Homeowners and Dwelling Fire programs written by the Business Unit.  Monitor DOI complaints as needed.
  • Develops and secures approval of a coordinated budget for area(s) of responsibility.  Administers or delegates the administration of budgets, approving expenditures, reviewing reports, and so forth.
  • Develops, approves, and (when necessary) secures approval of policies designed to ensure the attainment of agreed-upon goals in accordance with approved plans for the area(s) of responsibility.  Ensures the development of procedures necessary to implement policy.  Provides the overall direction necessary to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective area services.
  • Liaison with other organizational components; establish and maintain the working rapport necessary to develop cooperation and effectively integrate area services into the company’s overall business fulfillment system.
  • Leading a team of up to 3 individuals.


What are the requirements needed for this position?  

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in the insurance industry.
  • 7 years of experience in underwriting & compliance
  • 10 years of product experience with homeowners and dwelling fire insurance.
  • 10 years of experience demonstrating analytical and quantitative skills to evaluate product and customer profitability.
  • Proven experience leading a team of professionals.
  • Experience and ability to collaborate with: senior management from all disciplines, client, prospect, and business partner senior management.

What other skills/experience would be helpful to have?  

  • M.B.A. or equivalent advanced degree or CPCU designation
  • Experience with product branding, pricing, positioning, and competitive analysis
  • Experience successfully communicating with, selling to, and obtaining the support of senior leadership on new initiatives
  • Experience successfully developing and implementing new profitable products
  • Proven ability to think strategically and innovatively
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills to effectively communicate product strategy and corresponding operating procedures to all levels within the company
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams
  • Problem-solving ability and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities and align activities and priorities to meet organizational goals
  • Proven project management skills and good organizational skills to complete multiple complex tasks promptly.

How much should I expect to travel?  

  • Up to 10% travel

Pay Range

$116,900.00 - $195,300.00

Any posted pay range considers a wide range of compensation factors, including candidate background, experience, and work location, while also allowing for salary growth within the position.
