Director, Global Functional Communications

Job Summary

The Director, Communications protects and grows Assurant’s reputation among its leaders and employees through functional communications through the following:

  • Leveraging news related specifically to Finance transformation and major Finance initiatives and news to demonstrate finance and business momentum
  • Positioning executives as thought leaders, internally
  • Aligning the Finance team and broader employee base with Finance priorities and activating Assurant’s culture within teams

Key Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Develops annual and project plans grounded in the priorities that support the Finance function and overall Finance initiatives GFS and transformation (75%); Strategy & Risk (15%); Other related communications (10%) to deliver positive outcomes for the function’s and the company’s reputation.
  • Anticipates function’s needs and issues and works with key leaders to communicate across the team and the company to provide proactive counsel, creative solutions and thoughtful execution.
  • Effectively collaborates across functions, when necessary and appropriate to develop content and secure approvals for plans and content.
  • Manages any issues with reason and calm, working across functions and providing sound communications counsel to protect Function and the company’s reputation.
  • Develops written communications and talking points that are clear, compelling, concise and aligned with Assurant’s culture and voice at the core – and, when appropriate, individual leaders’ voices.
  • Effectively engages and manages any outside agency partners to effectively and efficiently use resources to support communications activities.
  • Proactively recommends way to better align and engage employees in the business priorities.
  • Identifies ways to bring to life and embed the company’s culture (The Assurant Way) within business units and teams.
  • Develops all plans, programs and communications guided by the company’s commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.


  • Must be able to travel up to 10%
  • Minimum Education:  Bachelor's degree, preferably in communications
  • Minimum Experience:  10+ years overall communications experience with 5+ years of corporate employee/functional/internal communications
  • 3+ years team management/leadership experience
  • In depth experience with change and transformation focused communications
  • Experience managing large, enterprise wide initiatives
  • Experience in technology/insurance/financial services industry a plus
  • B2B and B2B2C experience a plus

Preferred Skills

  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to interact with the C-suite
  • Understanding of employee communications strategies, tactics and channels.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex business and financial information, including excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Organized, deadline-driven and capable of managing multiple priorities and delivering results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Project management, strategic planning and decision-making skills.
  • Research capabilities and ability to form rich information networks.
  • Ability to collaborate and work well in a team environment, across matrixed organizations.
  • Ability to work unpredictable hours if/when necessary as well as be available for travel.
  • Ability to supervise others.
  • Experience collaborating with and advising senior leaders on communications strategies.
  • Experience working with external vendors, including freelance writers.
  • Ability to treat confidential or sensitive material appropriately.

Business or Industry Expertise:  

  • Solid business acumen.  
  • Knowledge of insurance/financial services industry in general a plus. 

Problem Solving :  

  • Ability to demonstrate “seat-at-the-table” presence with senior level executives
  • Ability to translate overarching functional goals into directive, strategic communication plans.
  • Ability to develop and execute employee communications plans to help meet business objectives.
  • Ability to assess and interpret facts and trends to develop and synthesize key messages into written materials.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex information in ways that inform, persuade and engage target audiences, including excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
