Director, State Filings and Product Compliance

Overview of Position

The Director, State Filings and Product Compliance is responsible for developing short- and long-term goals for the department to ensure that Assurant remains competitive in the market and that programs follow regulatory requirements. You will be responsible for managers and staff supporting one or more business segments and their new product initiatives and/or compliance. You will also track metrics and expenses for your unit while assisting in the preparation of the annual budget for the department. This is a remote position.

What will my duties and responsibilities be in this job?

  • Provide input in the development of new programs, improving existing products, and/or discontinuing unprofitable or high compliance risk programs

  • Conduct standing meetings with direct reports to receive updates on projects

  • Draft forms for new programs or review forms drafted by staff  

  • Attend periodic compliance meetings to discuss regulatory changes 

  • Identify issues with implementing new regulatory changes that can negatively impact our programs or how our company does business 

  • Prepare compliance write-ups or review write-ups prepared by staff

  • Identify possible obstacles that could delay state approvals and reduce speed to market

  • Coach and develop direct reports to broaden their knowledge

  • Perform semi-annual and annual reviews, perform audits of analyst’s filings, keep track of productivity reports, and coordinate and track progress of special projects within the department

  • Communicate approved policies and procedures to direct reports and ensure compliance

  • Respond to Market Conduct, Litigation, State Surveys or Data Calls, Audits (Internal or External)

  • Assist in developing short- and long-term goals and plans for the department. This includes: (a) developing efficient workflow patterns; (b) establishing procedures and policies; (c) ensuring suitable staffing levels (d) determining if the department should purchase or develop databases and/or systems to facilitate workflow (e) developing training manuals for area personnel

  • Maintain disaster recovery plan for the department and ensure staff complies with data security and RIM requirements

What are the requirements needed for this position?

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • 6 or more years of experience in the insurance industry. Experience in submitting filings a plus

  • 3 or more years of experience in management and the ability to effectively prioritize work activities for direct reports to meet tight deadlines and deliver on customer and company expectations

  • Knowledge of service contracts is a plus

  • Paralegal or Insurance designation a plus

  • Exceptional problem solver with the ability to solve issues independently

  • Excellent ability to organize, pay attention to detail and set priorities

  • Proactive and responsive communicator

  • Travel may occasionally be required to insurance departments or other Assurant offices. May voluntarily travel to professional and industry meetings upon occasion

What other skills/experience would be helpful to have?

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively perform duties

  • Ability to balance compliance with business and company strategies and directives

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and the corresponding ability to make decisions or recommendations on incomplete information

  • Strong interpersonal ability to effectively interact with internal employees, insurance departments, and external representatives

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of regulatory compliance and filing process flow

  • Strong knowledge of SERFF and State Filings systems

  • Knowledge of human resource policies and procedures
