Financial Risk Director

Assurant is seeking a Financial Risk Director. This individual will be responsible for developing and delivering the second-line oversight by the Financial Risk function of the Enterprise Risk Team. The scope of Financial Risk includes capital & liquidity, portfolio risk, cat risk, pricing and reserving plus financial aspects of Strategy risk (affecting shareholder value e.g., risks of losses of clients). The role will interact as a business partner to appropriate business teams and leaders to assess financial risks across Assurant. They will manage parts of risk appetite relating to financial risks – assisting first-line risk appetite owners to set / change appetite limits, monitor and take actions when appetite may be trending towards breach. The job holder will assist the VP Financial Risk to fulfil Risk Team’s roles and responsibilities in relation to (a) Stress Testing Framework and (b) Model Risk Management (MRM).  MRM is a key priority for Risk during 2021.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Establish their network of stakeholders across relevant 1st line management teams to be able to identify, assess, report and escalate across a wide spectrum of financial risks (defined above)

  • Interact with colleagues internal to Risk Team on all financial risks and financial aspects to all risks

  • Develop detailed knowledge of Assurant’s approaches to (a) capital and liquidity management (b) asset management (c) products, pricing and deals methodologies (d) reinsurance and corporate insurance (including cat modeling) (e ) other sources of financial risk

  • Manage parts of risk appetite relating to financial risks – assisting first-line appetite owners to set / change appetite limits, monitor and take actions when appetite may be trending towards breach.  Coordinate financial risks as they are reported via the Enterprise Risk Dashboard.

  • Develop the Stress Testing Framework in partnership between Risk Team and Treasury.   Assist in the development of stress scenarios and assumptions-setting. Quantify and filter risks identified by other parts of the Risk Team to translate into stress scenarios to enable measurement of the risks.

  • Develop policy and procedures for Model Risk Management (MRM).

  • Develop ‘definition of models’ and maintain model inventory (as per MRM) and populate inventory including risk ranking of models

  • Manage Risk Team’s role in model validation.  The job holder may perform validation activities directly themselves; may assist first-line modelers to prepare for validation or self-validation; may liaise and coordinate with external contractors if such are hired to perform aspects of validation.

  • Participate in wider Risk Team processes in the context of financial risk – including preparation of the ORSA (Own Risk and Solvency Assessment) Report; the RCSA (Risk & Control Self Assessment); the Enterprise Risk Dashboard and the Enterprise Risk Register


  • 5+ years’ experience working in financial management or in analytical / audit role in financial management

  • Strong analyst / consulting skills to interact with business colleagues in a wide variety of risk assessment tasks involving (a) data gathering; (b) analysis; (c) challenge; (d) remediation and (e ) reporting

  • Gravitas to handle meetings at SVP and EVP levels

  • Knowledge and experience of components of Model Risk Management – either from designing, developing and building financial models – or from carrying out MRM or model validation activities as a second-line reviewer

  • The job holder will be required to develop knowledge in the following specialist areas.  Time will be allowed for education / training on these topics, although it will be advantageous if job holder has more knowledge at outset from their existing qualifications and experience:

> Modeling for Stress and Scenario testing

> Catastrophe modeling and reinsurance program design

> Portfolio Risk modeling to measure risk in asset portfolios and Strategic Asset Allocation

> Property & Casualty reserving

> Counterparty Credit risk management

> Business Planning and Group Strategy development.

  • Target level of qualification of 1 – 3 years’ post completion of ASA, FSA, ACAS, FCAS – or equivalent qualifications related to CFA or to CPA.   Or International equivalents.
