Product Development Director

Reporting to the VP, Product Management Executive, the Product Development Director will lead and manage key product development initiatives to support the Multi-Family Housing business objectives.  Along with evaluating new products and services.  The director will play a key role in the product development and growth for Multi-Family Housing.  This position requires high energy, a positive attitude and a team player mentality.  Strong communication skills, project management, research, organizational and analytical problem-solving skills are essential.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Strategically manages the New Product Development function for the Multi-Family Housing business and works closely with cross-functional enablers in Operations, Technology, Actuarial and Legal to take prototype business cases from pilot programs to full launches

  • Owns and drives the development of new products or business ideas that are in line with the Multi-Family Housing strategic imperatives

  • Manages initiative budgets to ensure product development cost/benefit expectations are being met and revenue streams are generated at planned or better than plan levels

  • Works with the Multi-Family Housing team to identify, evaluate, and recommend strategic growth initiatives to ensure a robust pipeline of new initiatives

  • Owns the assigned initiatives to ensure that business cases are met for both pilot and full launch initiatives

  • Develops business case for concepts, including helping to assess in-market potential of concepts in order to maximize revenue potential and minimize duplication of efforts

  • Identifies key research needs to help identify unmet needs, builds business case for funding research, recommends a research strategy and leads the team’s research implementation

  • Negotiates internally with senior management and externally with clients, third party vendors and strategic partners

  • Works with legal teams to effectively manage Intellectual Property and protect assets

  • Oversees the handover of successful product introductions to operations management after specified test period or initial rollout

  • Supports peers to define growth strategy and identify, evaluate, and recommend strategic growth initiatives to ensure a robust pipeline of new initiatives

  • Support peers in operations management in making recommendations for product enhancements.

  • Coaches and mentors peers and staff to build organizational expertise

Basic Qualifications

  • 8 years of Financial Services or Insurance industry business experience

  • 6 years of experience in new product development or product management

  • B.S./B.A. degree

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.B.A. or equivalent advanced degree

  • 6 years of experience in leading teams

  • Experience successfully developing and implementing new profitable products and /or businesses

  • Experience successfully communicating with, selling to, and obtaining the support of senior leadership on new initiatives

  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills to effectively communicate product implementation strategy and corresponding operating procedures to all levels within the company

  • Proven ability to think strategically and innovatively

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross functional teams

  • Problem solving ability and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities and align activities and priorities to meet organizational goals

  • Ability to process complex time sensitive data and information from multiple sources, make decisions based on this data, and to effectively communicate the related required actions to a broad audience

  • Strong project management skills and good organizational skills to complete multiple complex tasks in a timely fashion

  • Knowledge of and past use of innovation and new product development tools

  • Ability to draw upon a broad base of technical skills to creatively solve complex product development challenges

  • Ability to perform in a fast paced, dynamic and ambiguous business environment

  • Ability to work with senior level specialists in Legal, Actuarial, Finance, Operations, and Marketing

  • P&C insurance experience
