Federal Government Affairs Manager

Reporting to the VP of Federal Affairs, the Federal Government Affairs Manager will be responsible for supporting Assurant’s Federal Government Affairs engagements with key stakeholders. Other responsibilities will include tracking and reporting the pertinent developments about public issues that matter to Assurant while managing the day-to-day operations of the Assurant Political Action Committee (PAC).  The position will start off remote temporarily due to Covid-19.

The Details:

  • Represent the company in trade association and stakeholder meetings and who can summarize and report pertinent developments about the issues that matter to Assurant.

  • Manage the day-to-day administration of the Assurant Political Action Committee and PAC website content

  • Draft employee solicitation communications and PAC newsletter

  • Serves as liaison to political giving compliance counsel and PAC services administrator

  • Research, analyze, and summarize the effect of federal legislation and regulations on business practices and procedures

  • Track federal legislation, proposed regulations, and pertinent public policy issues using tracking tools, communications from trade associations, and other external resources

  • Support Assurant's trade association relationships and interests and participates in trade association and stakeholder meetings

  • Foster strong working relationships with business leaders, in-house business attorneys, the Government Relations team, and the Compliance Team

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • 4 years of experience working in a policy capacity on Capitol Hill, industry trade association, corporation, or a political fundraising team

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to analyze and synthesize complex public policy topics/discussions

  • Ability to handle a diverse set of issues and provide a high level of customer service in a calm and professional manner

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization internally and externally

  • Highly autonomous and self-motivated work ethic; demonstrating sound judgment, initiative, and an ability to manage multiple priorities with a sense of urgency

  • Demonstrate an ability to handle matters of a sensitive and confidential nature, and the capacity to maintain composure while working under pressure

  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build a trusting work environment

  • Strong political acumen with established relationships on Capitol Hill and/or in the Executive Branch

  • Familiarity with legislative and/or regulatory matters in insurance, housing, telecommunications, or other highly regulated industries preferred

  • Political fundraising experience (is a plus)

  • Up to 30% travel required after Covid-19 restrictions are lifted
