What's the role about?
The Automation Process Engineer is the onsite lead for planning, deploying, and integrating new automation within Assurant’s Australia Supply Chain operations, based in Auburn NSW. This role owns the end-to-end implementation lifecycle for new automation machinery and mechatronic solutions, while ensuring new and existing automated systems are optimized for maximum uptime, throughput, safety, and reliability. This role will include:
Automation Deployment & Commissioning (40%)
- Lead end‑to‑end deployment of automation equipment: installation, commissioning, testing, and handover
- Manage project plans, schedules, risks, and change control to ensure safe, on‑time go‑live
- Own FAT/SAT, ramp‑up plans, and performance validation against throughput and quality targets
- Coordinate vendors, Facilities, IT, and EHS to ensure full site readiness and integration
System Ownership, Reliability & Operational Support (25%)
- Act as SME and Tier 2/3 escalation point for automated machinery, robotics, vision, and control systems
- Monitor performance (throughput, downtime, OEE) and lead root cause analysis for repeat issues
- Develop preventive maintenance strategies and spare parts plans to reduce downtime
- Partner with operations to optimise equipment availability and safe operation
Automation Strategy & Business Case Development (20%)
- Identify and prioritise automation opportunities across warehouse and supply chain operations
- Define requirements, process flows, and system integrations aligned to site constraints
- Build business cases (CAPEX/OPEX, ROI, timelines) and present recommendations for approval
- Collaborate with global automation and supply chain solutions teams to align with future roadmap
Continuous Improvement & Optimisation (10%)
- Analyse workflows and data to identify bottlenecks and improve capacity and quality
- Apply structured CI methodologies (Lean / Six Sigma highly regarded)
- Evaluate new Industry 4.0 and warehouse automation technologies and lead pilots where relevant
Training, Safety & Compliance (5%)
- Develop SOPs, work instructions, maintenance plans, and training materials
- Train and coach operators and maintenance teams for safe, independent operation
- Ensure all automation complies with WHS, safety, and internal compliance standards
- Collaborate closely with the US automation team on best practices and new technologies
Does this sound like you?
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Proven experience in process engineering and/or automation within a supply chain, logistics, manufacturing, or operational environment.
- Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen methodologies for process improvement will be highly regarded
- Demonstrated track record delivering equipment rollout projects from concept to go-live, including vendor coordination and timeline management.
- Hands-on technical expertise troubleshooting and maintaining automated machinery (e.g., conveyors, sortation, robotics, vision systems) and control systems (PLC, sensors, industrial networks).
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills with experience performing root cause analysis and implementing sustainable corrective actions.
- Ability to communicate complex engineering concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders; confident partnering with operations teams.
- Working knowledge of Australian WHS requirements in industrial/warehouse environments and safe systems of work.
