Summer 2027 - Underwriter Intern

We are seeking an Underwriting Intern to join our team!

The Assurant Internship Program is a 12-week immersive experience where interns do not sit on the sidelines. You will gain real-world experience by tackling business challenges and helping drive meaningful outcomes. The program combines hands-on work with learning and development opportunities, mentorship, networking and engagement opportunities, and resources designed to support your professional growth. 

The Underwriting Intern will support the Underwriting team by assisting with risk analysis, portfolio management, reporting, and underwriting processes that help drive informed business decisions and profitable growth. This role offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in insurance underwriting, data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration while developing foundational skills for a career in underwriting and risk management.

Underwriting Analysis & Development (80%)

• Assist the Underwriting team with data collection, analysis, and reporting of key underwriting and portfolio performance metrics.
• Support the review and evaluation of underwriting results, trends, risk characteristics, and financial performance.
• Assist in the preparation of underwriting reports, presentations, and business insights for internal stakeholders.
• Conduct research and analysis to support underwriting strategies, pricing initiatives, and risk management decisions.
• Help identify opportunities for process improvements and support the development of more efficient underwriting practices.
• Utilize reporting and analytical tools to manage and interpret underwriting data in support of various projects.
• Collaborate with underwriting, finance, product, and operations teams to support business objectives.

Project Management & Continuous Improvement (20%)

• Participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions to support underwriting initiatives and business solutions.
• Assist in documenting underwriting processes, standard operating procedures, and work instructions.
• Support special projects related to portfolio management, risk assessment, business analytics, and operational improvements.
• Contribute to process mapping and workflow optimization efforts.

Basic Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years completed and currently enrolled in a 3rd or 4th year undergraduate program in Risk Management, Finance, Business Management, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Information Systems, or a related field. Master's degree candidates will also be considered.
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
• Experience with Microsoft Excel, including data analysis, reporting, and basic modeling.
• Interest in insurance, underwriting, risk assessment, and business analytics.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Experience using data visualization or analytical tools (Power BI, Tableau, SQL, or similar) is a plus.
• Coursework in insurance, risk management, finance, statistics, or related disciplines preferred.
