Show, Don’t Just Tell: How to Quantify Your Impact on a Resume

One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make on their resumes is being too vague about their accomplishments. Recruiters review hundreds of resumes each week, and the ones that stand out are not just lists of responsibilities; they clearly tell a story of results. It’s not sufficient to say you “led social media strategy” or “managed a team.” Instead, focus on what that leadership achieved or what your team accomplished under your direction. When you quantify your impact, you help recruiters and hiring managers see the value you could bring to the company.

Let’s break it down. Quantifying your impact means adding numbers, percentages, or timeframes to your accomplishments. This provides hiring managers with a clearer picture of what you did and how effectively you did it. Think of it as proof that you were effective in your role.

Here’s an example: Instead of writing “Managed the company’s email marketing campaigns,” try this: “Led email marketing campaigns that increased open rates by 35% and contributed to a 20% boost in sales over six months.”

See the difference? The second version tells a recruiter, “This person knows how to drive results.” Even if you don’t work in a numbers-heavy role, you can still demonstrate your impact. Did you save time, improve processes, or train new employees? Think about the before-and-after outcomes, and try to attach numbers wherever you can.

Your resume is your personal highlight reel—make it count. Take the extra time to think through your achievements and translate them into data points. This effort will create a stronger impression and could be the key to landing your next opportunity.
